I have a red jewel that I had for about 3 month now. He has been the same color every since I get him & he won't color up, it like the the only time I can see the red is when he swims close to the front of the tank. He's about 3 inches so do it have something to do with age, size of him or is it just some are darker red then other?

They tend to only be very red when they are in a pair situation. Single's are normally greenish.

The trouble with pairs is they become terribly aggressive. This is especially true if your jewel is Hemichromis bimaculatus rather than the H. liafelli usually sold as H. bimac.
