My New setup

Hello everybody! I am very new to this boad. Someone offered me a 55 gal. for free so I decided to get back into having a tank. Still have not made a decision as to what kind of fish I am going to get. I am running a Fluval 404. I currently have one 12" air stone running. Do you think I need more air going? Well just waiting to get a cycle going and I will take it from there. Good-bye for now.

maybe some schools of tetras? or if you want something different, maybe an african brown knife fish? or maybe a tank full of catfish? or natives only?!?! i would be like a kid in a candy store with a free 55 gallon tank!

The airstone isn't necessary at all; it is only for looks. All the oxygen you need is obtained by surface agitation; if you want more oxygen, simply point the outflow of the 404 so that it points towards the surface.

Very cool! Welcome to MFT. The fluval should be all the filtration you need, and like bigred said you need to have some kind of surface agitation so either the air stone or the output from the canister filter needs to be breaking the surface of the water.

You have hundreds of options with a 55 g tank...best suggestions for stock would be to head to your local stores and do some window shopping. See what catches your eye, write it down, do some research. Glad to hear you say you're cycling first!
