I went to Pet Smart today, *SLEEPING* I bought a 10g tank to be used for my quarantine tank. It was a kit, came with a heater (which I am not sure is good enough), a hang on filter (which isn't any good to me), but it was, the only small tank they had, that had a cover for it and it also had a light. My book shows an air driven sponge filter in the diagram and says you can take the sponge and put it in your sump to get the bacterial growth it also shows some LR, good enough or not? I also bought two more books.

Always good to have a quarantine/hospital tank on hand. Sounds like your new toy should work nicely.

You can use the HOB filter if you want. It's fine for a quarantine tank. What you can do to cycle the tank is when you set up your large tank, put a piece or two of live rock in your quarantine tank (with saltwater), then remove it a few weeks later when you're getting zero ammonia readings. That way, your filter/tank will be cycled and you can put fish in. You should remove the rock before adding fish, and you generally can't treat fish with live rock in the tank. I'd recommend this because your main tank isn't set up yet, so you may as well cycle both the main tank and quarantine at the same time.

By the way, a hospital tank and quarantine tank aren't usually the same tank. It's either a hospital tank or a quarantine tank. Quarantining is extremely important in saltwater fishkeeping.

Thanks, I didn't think I would be able to use the HOB filter. The filter comes with a blue charcole filter then a black mesh strainer filter after that. Should I use both of these filters when using the tank?
