My dads nursing home wants to get a 75gal+ fishtank. I get to pick out the fish stocking.

My idea WAS to set up a african cichlid setup BUT my dad hates the idea. He wants the aquarium to be a peaceful fishtank with colorful and peaceful fish.

So got any suggestions about the stocking?

dad told me that the nursing home he works in wants to set up a

My 30 Gal set up is very pleasing and could work for what you are looking for. The Firemouths and Columbian red fins seem to be a good combo, the firemouths would grow to nice centre piece fish, some schoaling activity from the redfins, a couple of plecs and you already have the basis of an intresting SA Biotope. Maybe Convicts or parrots too.

I'd reccomend avoiding the smaller types of tetra, these seem the most vulnerable to water condition problems, which if you arent directly looking after could be a problem. Also maybe the smaller fish may be wasted on some of the 'less sighted' residents...

Anyways hope they get something nice.

oh maybe one other reccomendation would be for plastic plants to keep maintnance down...

If you are going to maintain this tank, would you consider going brackish?
Monos, non-painted glass fish, some killies and mollies would make for a pleasing community tank in a retirement home..I think.

I think the monos are beautiful and if I remember correctly they are a relatively peaceful shoaling fish. Glass fish are just freaky looking. Sure to draw attention. Mollies would add color.:D

How about discus? You could always do a school of the larger SA tetras, and some discus.

I'm always partial to planted tanks :). I'd gladly donate some of my plants for a cause like this.

If you decide to do goldfish (Which it does not sound like you are) I would go with shubunkins. They're my favorite and they're sure to thoroughly confuse those with less familiarity to fish. I've had people tell me they're not sure where the goldfish in my tank is, because they don't think my shubunkin is one. Just a thought!

Otherwise, I think a brackish tank would be a great idea, too. You can have some little fatty puffers which I'm sure will turn all of the old women into squealing fits due to the cuteness of those little guys. Killis are a personal favorite of mine, but unless you get a pair or a very friendly one, they can get boring to watch. Unless you happen to see one yawn. While it's facing you. I just about imploded from the hilarious cuteness when I first saw that. :p But in all seriousness, I think people would enjoy the puffers because many of them probably always thought that puffers were saltwater fish and it will be an interesting learning experience. Good luck! I envy you, this would be a fun project!

Think that would make a good display, nice balance of fish in there.

I haven't seen the rainbows before but I think they would be a nice choice a bit more colour than the flag, and you wil have a lot of silver in there already from the tetra's to balance the colours out.

A rubber lip would be a nice small pleco, but there are some beautiful unusual ones out there too, a couple of zebras would look spectacular in there. Or something tiny like a couple of pitbulls would keep everything clean but probably just disappear in there...

Enjoy...
