Hi guys, I have a baby redtail catfish that I've had for 10 days. The petstore ordered him specifically for me so I felt obligated to take him, especially since I had already paid for him. Anyway, when I got him his fins were pretty chewed up and both top wiskers had bin bitten off to little nubs.

I did a 4 day treatment of furon just in case it was some type of fin rott. He did not eat for the first week but now will eat little chunks of steak.

Fins look like they have improved but one of his chewed off top whiskers looks like it is infected. All around it looks like it is kind of bleeding. It looks almost like an open sore and it is spreading across his face.

I have no idea what to do. Last night I put in a treatment of stress coat. Looks like it has gotten worse since then.

Does anyone have any suggestions please

Besides a request for more information...some Melafix or Pimafix might be a good idea. I don't know much about these guys, but if they can stand a higher temperature in the tank, raise it up to around 80ish.

What size tank, inhabitants, temp, parameters?

temp is 75, its just a hospital/quarentine tank....20 hex...right now its him, a small pleco, and an algae eater.

The tank is cycled and yesterday had a low nitrate reading of like 3-5.

I'll turn the temp up to 80

Yes Pimafix and Melafix are two good medicines to add to help the skin, fins and making it heal. It also just sounds like your fish was caught in a fight.

I like to keep my tank temps up a bit higher, it keeps things like ick from infecting your tank. It sounds like you are on the right track. What kind of algae eater is it? If it is a chinese algae eater, he might be picking on your fish, they are known to be aggressive when they get older.
