My Snail is Acting Weird

My snail is acting a little strange. I read that it was ok for them to sit inside their shell for a while (unless they stink, then they are dead) but mine is not sitting inside his shell but outside his shell and upside down on the bottom of the tank. He is still alive and he comes out at night. I know this because when I wake up in the morning he is in a different spot. If he feels threatened he will still go inside but it is just weird that he is sitting outside his shell. Is there anything wrong?

ya know...one of my snails did this when I moved him to a new tank. My roommate kept telling me he was dead and I'd reach in and poke him and he'd move so I left him alone. Who knows. After a week or so he stopped doing it and is back to his normal snail behavior...I have no idea what the deal was!
