Either take the 2 random fish to the store and start out with fish he really wants, or get more of each and maybe some bottom dwellers and/or centerpiece fish like gourami.

the cichlid definitely no. platys, mollies, swords, and gups are more happy in groups of 6 or more, but the livebearers will school together, so i would recomend getting around 5-6 mollys, swords, platies combined, you can go up to 10 but be start off small, never add more than 6 fish to a tank at a time.

I think the only cichlids you could realistically expect to live with those other fish are German Blue Rams (need excellent water quality), Apistos, or Kribensis.

I see on the profiles that Keyhole Cichlids are categorized as "community" fish but not sure why Jayrod nixed it--so I'm not going to say it would be ok or not. ;) Hopefully one of the cichlid-experts will chime in here. Good luck!
