I have a mysterious killer in my freshwater tank, and I don't know what it is.  My shark has it now.  He is totally vertical, and bobbing at the top of the water.  He seems to be struggling to stay at the surface. There are absolutely no external signs of fungus or bacteria, and gills are not red or swollen.  My gorami had the same thing.  Gulped air at the surface for 3 days and then died.  Before that, I had a danio do the same thing.  None of the other fish seem to be affected.  I have added some CopperSafe trying to stop whatever it is, but it doesn't seem to be working.  Does anyone know what this could be, or what I can do to save my shark?

Well if there is no external signs of stress, it could possibly be that you might have high nitrates in your tank or low oxygenation.  Can you tell us how many fish you have, type of fish, filtration, and tank size?

I agree with dattack.

Aerate the tank immediatly.

Take an ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte test.

If you dont have these do a 50 % water change and go buy some test kits. If it is ammonia nitrIte or NitrAte the water change will help . The added airstone or whatever you have can help if it is an O2 problem.

You should give us your tank size, fish, how long it has been set up, ect.

I have to disagree

The fish was bobbing up and down right? I'm thinking it might be swimbladder. Bobbing up and down is a symptom but, that doesn't explain on how the fish are gasping  for air  :p Hmmmmmmmmmmmm........................... i will have to think about that :)

It might be Ammonia, Nitrite or NitrAte problem :( THe info on the tank would b helpful how many fish?Tank size? how londg has it been set up,ect. Basically the Q's dattack and Barb asked ;D

                              Best of luck,

Man your confusing Daniel! ;D

I don't think it's swimbladder. Since they all have it and they're gasping for air. Swimbladder is obvious for a while and they wouldn't die that quickly either.

Give us some more to work with and we can help you some more. Thanks. ;D
