Mystery of the missing catfish

I decided to do a more thorough cleaning of my tank and decided to remove my fake rocks prior to vacuuming. I have two plastic rocks that the upside down catfish hides under. After removing the rocks the catfish was hiding in the gravel while I vacuumed (as I almost hit him with the siphon tube). After completing the cleaning and draining the old water (fish free) I put the rocks back in the tank. I can't find the catfish anywhere in the tank??? I suspected that maybe I had placed a plastic rock on him or maybe he was trapped in the hollow area in the rock. I lifted the rocks and inspected them for the catfish.. pouring out the water and hoping that he would come out. There really isn't any other hiding spots..I have no idea where he went? Three of us watched the tank as I moved the rocks to make sure that he didn't dart out undetected.. Anyone have any idea where he might be? Can he be buried in the gravel?? If so, is this normal and wil he be able to free himself? Can he be stuck in the hollow area in a rock?

He' back!! He wasn't in the tube or in the filter. My best guess is that he was hidden in the gravel as I saw him digging in the gravel as I was vacuuming. Very strange since I inspected the gravel and couldn't find him.. Wonder how deep he can go..... Hmmm
