Is this species also referred to as "Ice Blue" something or another?

I really love the look of these guys and I wish I had an LFS around here that sold them (or even The Drs but they don't carry them.) I think they would look great mixed with yellow labs in a tank that would support them.

I'm going to hang on to my Auratus. I've got three now and imo a fish with that type of reputation is a fish worth keeping. Could I move the blue one to a community tank while he is smaller than the rest of the fish in it? From the descriptions you all showed me, they aren't as aggressive as the others. Just wondering.

Oh and what is Mbuna?

Ice Blues are a type of zebra, socolofi are sometimes known as Powder Blues or the Pindani.

Too bad you don't live near me, I've got nearly a dozen socolofi juvies I'm trying to find homes for.

If there doesn't appear to be any threat of him being eaten by the larger cichlids in the tank you have it in, it may be best to leave it in there (considering your auratus, it'll be harder to intergrate it back to the tank when it's grown larger; they'll probably view it as an intruder at that time).

At least now it's small and hopefully not receiving much attention from your auratus'. By growing up in the tank with established mbuna, it'll have a smoother transition.

On the other hand, if it appears your socolofi can be eaten by the larger mbuna, you can try putting it in the community tank. How long it can remain in that tank is undeterminable (its behavior will let you know when it's time to place him back in with the mbuna).

Also, I have several socolofi (a bunch, actually), and while their aggression is probably not in the same league as the melanochromis aggression, they're aggressive in their own right, especially the males.

I'm working on upgrading my tank. I'm lookin at 16 Bow. Would this be adequate size for 3-5 cichlids?

IMO, NO!! A 16 g is way too small to house 3-5 cichlids. The ones you have should housed in nothing smaller than a 30 gallon tank. And that is just a short term solution. The average size of Mbunas is 4 to 5 inches. So a 16 gallon is a VERY SMALL tank for the ones you already have.

I'd keep "Blue-ie" where he is, just keep an eye out for Auratus. My "Little Shyt" was about 1/2 the size of your "Blue-ie" when I got him. Now he is one of the MEANEST fish in my tank with the exception of my Red Zebra who is twice his size.

The mbuna are in a 10gal kay-bee...
upgrading to a 16gal isnt much of an upgrade, i would aim higher, go for a 33, or better yet get a 55. the fish will be MUCH happier in a larger tank, and you will get to see the true personality of these lil guys.
