i am currently pricing equipment for a future reef tank. i was wondering, if i am planning on getting a 20-40 gallon tank, would i need a filter? i notice many smaller tanks don't use filters but at what size do u start using them?

you dont need a filter in saltwater tanks. Biologival filtration from live rock and water movement will be suffiecent. Also depending on the size you go up to a protein skimmer may be in order.

Like OCC stated, your LR with proper water movement and your substrate will provide your biological filtration. You could purchase a small filter to run Carbon in which would be a good option if you plan on a reef tank other wise -here is a list of what your basics are to get started in the SW world:

-Tank & Stand (Sump tank and pump as well if you go that route, which I would recommend if you want a reef tank)
-Lighting & Fixtures
-Heater(s)
-Powerheads
-Protien skimmer (recommended if you plan on making a Reef Tank)

-Hydrometer
-Salt Water test kit basics (pH, Alkalinity, ammonia, nitrate & nitrite)
-Thermometer(s)
-Syphon & bucket
-Glass algea scrub brush

-Salt mix
-LR
-Substrate
