is there a good, affordable, HOB or internal skimmer available? I have heard the fission nano is no good but does it at least function? Would it be ok in conjunction with plenty of LR and sand?

You heard right the Fission has a few design flaws, it produces micro bubbles like mad, but to hit the sweet spot to get the right bubbles is difficult and doesnt last long at all. I think a skilter would help a little and add to water movement at the same time.

tried it and it is a piece of junk. all the adjusting in the world can't remove the microbubbles and it produces nothing but water in the collection tube. A complete waste of money. I would go with the prizm maybe???

Prisms are tricky to tune, but can be made to work.

Frankly on my nano I did a 50% water change at least once a week. Anthony Calfo does a 90% on his, pretty nuch draining it to an an inch of water left. Far easier thn fiddle faddling with more junk

I have a 10g and I do about 30% weekly, no skimmer but I run an old aquaclear hob with carbon in it and it also adds water flow to the tank.....so far, everything seems stable and growing. Only have 1 small citron gobie in the tank and he pretty much runs the joint.

I agree with Lorna on this one. with a tank that small, you need to be doing the religious water changes anyway, and as long as you arent overstocked, the water changes with be able to remove as much organics in the water as a small skimmer. go with move water movement instead to make you LR a better filter.

I do the same on my 10g as Lorna except I have a larger HOB that I converted into a refugium with LR rubble.
