Personally i like natural but sometimes people like the "weird" themes, like having clear gravel, glasses, etc in a tank with a fish that corresponds with it. For example with the glass one they would put a school of Glass fish in it . That really looks neat but i wouldn't want it in my tank... just a matter of personality. I rather have the peaceful "natural" looking tank, but when you think about it my tanks really aren't natural. If they were the discus tank wouldn't have any live plants in it just roots and twigs, for that is their natural environment.

Yah i talk to much,
Daniel

The natural gravels is so much better looking than that colored crap. Plus you dont have to worry about the paint coming off and looking like crapola after 10 or so vaccummings.

over all neither one is better, its all preference.

I have both. I keep my larger tanks natural, and i have fun with my small tanks. Personally i prefer the natural tanks. My neon tank (hex 5) with royal blue gravel and all pink plants with black and white rock decor looks pretty cool, so im not about to make it look natural.

its all about having fun.

No, not really, there has been research done, on colored gravels vs odd 'unnatural' colors (like flourescent pink). When they were in an environment of 'odd' color, they would refuse to spawn, showed signs of being very stressed, were easily spooked.

There is also studies showing color development on different substrates, dark is usually the best to aid the fish's coloring.

Fish on dark gravel, such as black, will turn black and loose a lot of their beautiful color. Fish on very pale, white color gravel will also loose a whole lot of color as they pale as well. Fish like to blend into their enviroments, and I find that natural tanks with neutral color (shades of brown) and green plants (plastic or live) bring out the best in fish coloration. Dark blue and green also seem to go nicely with some fish, but like someone said, who really wants to be cleaning out paint flakes after so long?

i wouldnt agree with that colesea, most fish have never seen the wild to know what it looks like to feel comfortable in it, even many many many generations back, ive kept the same fish in gravel with 3 different color gravels, brown, black, white and from what ive seen black adds the contrast the bring the best color out in fish, brown with few plants to add green really make the colors bland but with lots of planting is very natural with nice coloring, and light colors make some fish pale while it makes others bright, this is why my saulosis have white crushed coral giving them an intense white, along with my puffer who change colors to blend into there enviroment so he is a beautiful shiny green/yellow, my mixed peacock and hap tank is a white color with a mixture of light browns, and my common tropicals are on black gravel with more natural plants driftwood and rockwork making them feel comfortable and creating contrast between there bright colors and the dark gravel
