I have a 55 gal tank. The filter is so noisey. I am sure it is the way it is suppose to be as it is the motor not the water.

What is a good one?

I persoanlly love canister filters,I like the eheim series they are great filters. fluval are also nice from what I have heard. you can try penguine hob filters but if you can afford it I would deffintly go with a canister, their silent, great at filtering (as filters are concerned), and dont need to be cleaned as much as hobs

yep but I can't really invest in that right now. I think I may get the Penquin 330 but I was reading some on it and it said you could use media filter of your choice, not sure what that means.

You guys and gals are great thatnks for all the help.

if u can splurge and get the Emporer 400.....far better than a Penguin...cuz u get 2 media baskets that u can filll with anything or just run 4 catridges at once like i did...So u like double filter the water. and the bio wheels always spin and are much larger than on a 330.

I like the Magnum Series, I have five total, 2 - 220s and 3 - 350's, all running fine, the oldest is 6 years old, with one impeller replacement, all have 0 bypass and are as quiet as any I've seen.

I would go with the Emperor 400, it is widely considered to be one of the best filters of any type. It is also very reasonably priced. You can get it on Petco.com for $45 and can take 20% off that if it is your first purchase. The bio wheel technology is amazingly simple, yet incredibly effective as a biological filter. Don't take my word for it, do a google search for Emperor 400 review and read for yourself.

I would go with either a Penquin 330 or an Aquaclear filter. The AC would be most cost effective in the long run since you don't have to worry about replacing filter media ever month. Just get an extra sponge and rinse them in tank water bi weekly.

If noise is not an issue then the emperors or one of the best HOB filters you can get... I've tried the Emperor 280's twice before settling with a penquin 330. The symphony of motor hum (duel motor), spray bar, and noise of water trickling off the bio wheels was over powering the TV in the same room. Penquin has slight water noise that can be greatly reduced by just turning down the flow one notch from max.

The AC is the quietest of the 3 that i have on my tanks. A single AC 500 would be all you need for the 55 gal.

As far as canisters, Ehiem classic's get my top pick. Very high quality at resonable prices. The Rena filstars come in second and are a great value for the amount of performance you get from them.

I would read through as many reviews to get a feel of what filter would best suit your needs for the price.

Good luck. :)

I really cant say enough about magnum 350 for filtration,I have one thats in its eighth year of continous service with no replacement parts whatsoever!
(on a side note: I just drilled into the side and silicoled a tube in place for my diy co2,and Im already seeing an improvement in my plants).I plan on putting 2 on my 125g im setting up.

supapoopa how do you turn down the noise on your penguin? You've got the biowheel right? I'm needing to cut back on the flow but can't find anything...I've read the manual and all but to no avail. Besides the noise on my biowheel I love it. So far (knock on wood) it's performend great and has been a tremendous asset to my tank.

The Penquin 330 is the only older model that i know that can have its flow adjusted by moving the intake tube up or down (3-4 positions). The other smaller models (170, 125, mini), i don't believe were able to adjust the flow.
