Ok guys here go, as you can see I have a water problem its Cloudy! And I can’t get it to clear up. Here’s a run down of my set up and water conditions. It’s a 110-gallon tank and it has two 4 ft. florescent bulbs on is a plant Grow bulb and the other is a Daylight bulb. I’m running a filstar XP3 canister filter and the media is 2- 20 pores per inch pads and 2- 30 pores per inch pads then BioMax biological filter media (rings) then Activated Carbon then one pouch of Bio chem zorb and then the Micro-filtration pad. I have 3 live plants in the tank along with 4 plastic ones. I NOW run the lights from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. I put them on a timer. Last week my wife left the lights on for 2 or 3 days. That’s when the water started getting cloudy and algae started to grow on the rocks, plants, glass and gravel. I did about a 40% water change this past Sunday. Tonight (Monday) my water conditions are: PH is 7.4 to 7.5 Ammonia is 0ppm and Nitrate is between 0ppm and 5.0ppm (about 3ppm) I have 2 common goldfish and 2 algae eaters in the tank and they have been in here since I started the tank about 2 to 2 ½ months ago. I cleaned the filter media also this past Sunday. I hope this gives you some insight and maybe help you come up with a solution to my problem. I’m thinking about getting a UGF and use with the filstar. I know what some might say about the UGF but I used one about 10 years ago in a 30 gal tank and never ever had a problem with the water. It’s just a thought for now. Well any help out there? Thanks, Dale

i'm not too sure as to your cloudy water other than some kind of bloom algae/bacteria. either way sense you only have 3 live plants kick your lights down to say 9-10 hours a day and run some good quality carbon to help remove excess nutrients from the water.as for a ugf in a tank that big,i think your asking for trouble.in a 30 no big deal but in a 110 ther is no need as that would just overcomplicate your tank with unessicary crud.maybe if you used a reverse flow power head to push detritus up through the gravel.anything just as long as you don't have this fixture of permanent crud that will sit in a low folw enviroment for the life of the tank.i use a ugf in my 30 gal. and the only reason for that is i can't afford anything else for now.that and it is still workable as long as you keep a close eye on it.
