My wife recently started an aquarium. She has posted a few discussions here before. However, she buys fish and plant because they look nice without researching to see if things are a good match.

She replaces the dead ones with new ones. I'm not sure she can even tell me every species in the tank. We have been through about $150.00 in fish with another $150.00 worth still in the tank. All this in a tank that hasn't even been through the Nitrogen cycle yet. As you can image, this is getting expensive. I'm tired of her throwing good money away.

Could someone take a look at the current mix she has an let me know if they see a problem. Also does she have to many fish. I think so. The tank is 44 gallons.

3 - Saulosi mbuna cichlid (2 male, 1 female)
1 - Auratus mbuna cichlid (already tagged as going back)
1 - Jewel cichlid
2 – Red Parrot Cichlids
1 - Some light blue and yellow with orange tail cichlid.
1 – Catfish (not a pleco) of some kind

I am concerned about the mbuna and the parrots. Their pH is kind of on the opposite sides of the spectrum aren't they?

Is the cat fish in danger from the cichlids? He was very expensive. She paid $45.00 for it but it is pretty small. It is spotted.

Nitrites are a real problem. She has done four 30% water changes in four day because the nitrite levels are beyond the range of her test kit. It only goes to 1ppm.

Please help arm me with some information so I can talk to her and stop the insanity. She says if these fish die, she wants to empty the tank and go saltwater.*crazysmil

Which will really hit you for cash and morality questions. The jewel cichlid is a pretty bad fit, and so too possibly is the catfish (gold nugget?).
If fish keep dying after a couple of weeks hasn't common sense kicked in yet? You need patience - only bad things happen quickly

hm, the problem is you have not cycled the tank yet, read some articles on fishless cycling and the nitrogen cycle (theres one on this site), the jewel, parrot, auratus and catfish should go back, may be best to return them all and fishless cycle from scratch so you dont lose anymore, if you dont return all te fish id suggest doing 10-15% water changes daily, most the fish you have are african rift lake cichlids, and mbunas, they need lots of rockwork and hard water with high pH, crushed coral will raise the hardness and pH or you can do what i do and add 1tbsp instant ocean 1tsp baking soda and 1 tsp epsom salt per 5 gallons, if you do this because you water is soft do it slowly so the fish have time to adapt to the progressivly harder water
