Hi all,

My current set-up in in my sig below.

I run a black sand substrate with a dark background, with about 2.5 wpg lighting. Two tall, healthy anachris, one large piece of driftwood, one medium white rock. Plants thrive. Slight issue with small snails and hair algae on the driftwood. I do about 15 percent water changes per week, and am very regular about checking and tending to my AC filter.

My problem is, the AQ 50 doesn't seem to do much in the way of mechanical filtration. With this stock, there's always crap on the bottom -- not just poo (actually, there's not really an poo at all).

My point is, it seems nothing chunky ever gets pulled out of this tank. I'm not sure even what the chunky stuff is -- baby snails, fish food, just stuff. I switched to a larger diameter suction hose, and that gets more. But with now 15 percent water changes weekly (I don't believe in doing more, less often, etc.), it just seems the AQ doesn't get everything up.

What are my options? Add another AQ 50 to the other side? Add a power head to increase underwater current, to drive suction?

I run a very good tank, biologically. I just want better mechanical filtration, and I'm inclined to believe that there's no so thing as too much filtration.

What's your advice on this setup and my request?

I do not run much in the way of a mechanical filter. I vacuum weekly, enough water to completely vac all the substrate. In your case you need to just stir the water enough above the sand so you can vac it out. You can also get a Hydor Koralia pump to kick up the sediment on the substrate by pointing it downward and get the junk into the water column so the filter can catch it.
