The first pic I would say is a female (due to the pink spot on her belly). As for the other pics, I'm not sure. My female got bright pink like that before she laid her eggs and right afterward. Though, I am not an expert, so someone else might be able to help you more.

Yes you are right. Also, I believe that the front two spikes on the upper fin is shorter than the others on a female and longer than the others on a male.

I didn't think about the features differing in the different bloodlines, but that makes sense.

K, this is what confuses me. The first one has the red belly, blue on the black, and is bigger than the other two, but has a little longer dorsal than the other two and is way brighter and more colorful (which are two characteristics of males). The second and third are both smaller (same batch), less colorful, pinkish belly, short dorsals, little color, but shape is more like a male. The first constantly chases the other two. Basically, I think they're all female cause they all have pinkish/red bellies, but the one in the first pic is almost dark red, BUT has longer dorsal spikes. Anyway, wondering cause I'm hoping to have a male to breed. But it seems like they're all female.

I'll upload my larger pics to my server and post here tomorrow. Right now, goin to bed! Night! :) Thanks.

I wasn't really plannin to (breed them). But thought I would at least try to sex them if I decided to. Tank is perfect breeding condition right now for rams and they're not breeding, so I'm almost sure they're all females. By the way, left ram on the second pic is the same ram on the first pic. I'm actually plannin to go to a different LFS and see what they got. I got these guys from an LFS closing by my house. (mad sale right now) Now I have to find another LFS. :( There's only Petco and Walmart by my house.

Haven't had time to post bigger pics. I have em but not resized. No time right now. (just droppin by before work)

This is all kinda funny. We're on opposite sides of the same coin. I've got 4 male rams (2 blue, 2 gold) and no female!
Maybe you can try
PETown Tropical Fish
23720 El Toro Road (Suite C), Lake Forest, California 92630
Phone: (949) 586 - 6430
Hours: Mon - Sat 10am to 9pm Sun 10am to 6pm
Alot better than Petco, Petsmart, or Walmart! Or PM me if you'd like to trade for a male gold :D .
They always have some rediculously good looking adult rams at Petown. None of that veil finned nonsense either just damn good looking rams. Choose one with long second and third dorsal rays and no pink belly. After you look at them for a while you start to really get a sense as to who's a male and who's female.

Ya, that's the LFS I've always gone to... That's the one that's closing! lol. You wouldn't want to trade. These fish have defects. (look real close, you can see tan bumps on all three. what are those anyway? some feeder goldfish I get have those) I'm plannin on giving these to a friend and getting a trio of gold rams later though. These were an impulse buy. I didn't really notice the bumps til I got home and after that I just said f*** it and kept em, didn't wanna go back to the LFS. Ya I know, there went 27 bucks. ($9 each) Ah well. I think I'll try the LFS in garden grove. (or is it anaheim) off I think chapman. Ahhh, I'll look it up.

you know your pet stores well dont you !! :p :D
I have to. There aren't too many good LFS's in Los Angeles. My boyfriend's in Brea so we go to his LFS's for alot of our stuff. I have to say most any fish shop in OC will beat most of the L.A. shops. Sad really.
Paradise Tropical Fish (in Northridge, awesome selection of Tangs and Malawian cichlids!) just shut down :( . I've yet to find anything better in L.A. county.
Anyhoo, SB, I've worked up a collection of business cards from a number of shops in both counties. You'll want to stay away from any of the ones in L.A. Most of them get interesting things in only randomly...usually by accident.

A personal hobby site. Freewebs is cool. I haven't got around to anything else really but I hope you can find the page useful.
The Sand Bar Petshop, Pacific Reef Tropical Fish, and The Reef Tropical Fish & Pets will be your best bet. The Sand Bar gets some neat things in but they never label anything correctly. I've seen Protocinclus sp. "Jumbo" and Geo. steindachneri there among other really interesting finds. HTH :D
