Neolamperougus Brichardi info

#1
Hey its me again, i wanted to start a new thread and ask about N.brichardi. I want to buy some but i was wondering about if they will do good with my other fish, i have the following:
4 silver dollars, 2 Golden rams, 2 blue rams, 2 killies, 2 gouramis, 4 tetras, 2 knight gobies, 5 cory cats, 1 female betta, and 2 angels. there in a 55G, yes i know it is a little over crowded in there, that is why i have two 29G tanks, and a 75G with over 200 swordtails and most of them are babies*SUPERSMIL . Please help me with this. Check out my other thread, search for Breeding options, then look for one started by silver dollars.*celebrate

No. I wouldn't ever suggest putting brichardis in with community fish. Chances are good that you'd get a male and a female and they'd start breeding, the rest of your tank's fish would all be pushed to one side, killed or chased out of the tank.

But just to be fair...Brichardis are gorgeous little fish and they'd be great fun to have in a species-only tank. They dont get huge...probably what 4 inches max? but their attitudes are huge. You could probably keep a colony in a 29. They're a lot of fun to watch raise their little babies.

I think a good healthy fish is a stunning fish. The particualr strain of brichardi I had, had a little bit of irridecent blue on the flanks. Not much, just just enough to give it a tiny bit of blueish sheen on them. It looked good on the juvies, but was spectacular on the adults.

No I wouldn't recomend brichardi with the fish you have now in a 55. How ever like Froggy said they would do quite well in a 29 gallon by themselves. These are a fish that's mainly though of as a species only tank because they are so feirce when they begin breeding. And once they start breeding an adult pair can lay eggs every two weeks. So it wouldn't take long to really over populate the tank.

That would be perfect :) And I agree, its not like they're colorful...but they are gorgeous. Mine have a little strip of yellow on their cheeks. They're not difficult to breed. I actually originally started out with two, HOPING that I got two females or two males so that they wouldnt breed...but they were a m/f and I soon had issues. They're definitely the rabbits of the tang world :) They're much more interesting to breed than community fish IMO because they have a whole little clan attitude. You know who the 'parents' of the fry are, you know who the dominant fish are...they have a whole little hierarchy figured out.

they're rock/cave dwellers...generally there aren't many plants in cichlid tanks...although I dont think brichardis are known for tearing plants up. I think Orion had them in a planted tank once upon a time. Mine like the rocks though.

Sure. They'll move whatever they dont like :) They love a sand substrate so they can really move things around, but I moved mine to gravel and they move that around too. I'd probably just stick with rocks.

Should i try to get these or not?????
I know that they should be separate from my other fish but here they are: 4 silver dollars, 1 Female Blue ram(my male and my golden ram pair died) 2 Angels, 2 Killies, 5 Cory cats(there just so cute that i buy them) 3 Tetras, 2 Honey Gourami's, and 1 female betta.
Is it still over crouded??? Please tell me my mistakes.

I'm seriously considering Brichardis for my second tank down the line - but, as it has been recommended, I'm planning on a species-only tank (you know, I should probably get my first tank set up before I start planning ahead - but where's the fun in that?)

Also, I'm big on subtle beauty in fish, which pretty much makes brichardi perfect for me. A little glint of blue here, a little flash of yellow there - that's real beauty, man.
