I have had it with my neons. I know that sounds horrible and I assure you all, I love my fish, but these neons are just a weak type of fish. I have had mine for about 8 months or maybe more. They are in my 29g tank with glowlights, panda cories, albino cories, an opaline gourami, and otos.
My troubles started about a couple months ago. I had a neon that showed some of the signs of Neon Tetra Disease. Its red stripe was really faded and it couldn't swim with its body horizontally. Its tail drooped a little. I ended up euthanizing it because it couldn't get to the surface to eat.
I had another neon that had a huge cyst/tumor on its tail. It was totally fine, it just had the cyst. Then the cyst got bigger and eventually looked like it was about to pop...kind of like a zit (thats why I assume it was a cyst). I finally euthanized it because I didn't want it to spread any kind of infection/bacteria to my other fish.
Then, today I get home and one of my glowlights is really pale. The orange stripe has a faded out place in it. It was swimming around fine. I went upstairs for dinner and came back to feed the fish, and I couldn't find the faded one. It was lying upside down on the bottom, but still breathing. I moved it to my 1g hospital tank to get it away from the other fish. I came back about 10 mins later and it was dead.
Ok, I'm almost done.... A little after the first neon died, I noticed another one was a little faded in his red line. He is still swimming fine to this day, but I'm worried about the fading. What is up with that? Here is a really blurry picture, but its the best I can do:
You can see the clearing in the red line...it is faded on both sides. Also, some of its blue is faded....I'm just really confused and frustrated. Is it some type of disease?
When all the neons and glowlights die, I'm staying away from them....I can't figure out what's wrong.
Any thoughts?
My water is fine: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrAte. The pH is around 6.8. Tank is planted and everyone gets along...
