Hi everyone,
Im currently reworking my community tank and have a lone neon at the moment and was thinking about getting him some friends. However i dont really want a large bunch of neons again so I want to ask whether a small group of neons would shoal with a few cardinals and a group of flame tetras? Any thoughts

hello. neons and cardinals are more shoalers than schoolers, but what you are doing sounds fine. i have found that rasboras, green-eyed rasboras and rummy-noses are far better schoolers than neons and such. even glass cats are fairly good for schooling.

if any of these are available to you you might check them out at some time or another.

im sure your neon would appreciate some new pals.....

I dont think that the cardinals or flame tetra would shoal WITH the neons, defintely wont school with them.....

but I think they would all get along just fine. plus having a few smaller groups of them will help them with the gourami's (since they can be kinda pushy)

I have 3 glowlight tetras, 1 neon tetra, 2 serpae tetras, and two lemon tetras. They have always schooled together. Alot of times that I look into the tank they are all lined side by side in different orders. pretty cool! I would definately suggest serpae tetras.

there seem to be different opinions on serpae tetras and their keeping. IME, they are some of the worst fish as far as aggression goes in that they seem to harass and bully each other to pieces. every time you look at them you notice new fin damage it seems like.

however, many people have had quite good luck with them and have no idea what i am talking about.

they are very attractive fish, so you may give them a go if you want to try it.

Yes I do. I have some bigger rocks in there too, but he always digs the middle and covers them up. It is a 2g hex with a ugf. I have had him for about 3 months. I did have 2 but he killed the other one. bad idea to put 2 cichlids in a 2g tank. I didn't know that when I got them though.
