I have 4 neon tetras in my tank with some other fish. They've been dying off for some reason and I don't know why, there's nothing to see on them and tonight one of them's swimming vertically and acting drunk and disorientated. He's still alive andhe keeps trying to swim properly.i've got him isoloated.Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing it? My other fish are fine.

Yes, I agree wiht revfred. Neons are quite sensitive. They prefer a slightly lower pH.
They also seem to get frightened easily. (i.e. easily stressed)
Cardinals are a bit more hardy. However they prefer a even lower pH than the neons. They are usually more expensive though.

I don't the difficulty is keeping them but finding good ones. They breed these things like crazy and then ship hundreds upon hundreds at a time. Neons are the obligatory first freshwater fish, everybody's first tank has a neon at one point are another.

If you really wanted to keep them I would buy about twice as many as you want. Say if you want 10 then get 20. Set them up in a cycled Q-tank and then wait it out. This will give you a chance to see if they have neon tetra disease or what not. I tried neons but never had luck. Personally I don't think I would try them again because I would probably opt for cardinals (I think they are prettier.)

Lastly you don't necessarily need to have a low ph. Yeah it is probably optimal but people around here keep discus in ph well over 7 so I wouldn't be to worried about that. If you really want neons go to a smaller non-chain store who doesn't have 400 of them crammed into one tank like feeder fish. I bet you will probably have more luck with them!!!

Thanks for the info,it's nice to know someone else has had the same problem.I'm now down to 2 so I've decided if these live they live.If they die they die.I'll see if i can find somewhere to get Cardinals.
I live in a really small town in British Columbia,Canada and we just ahve 2 small pet stores so I'll try in Kelowna which is 2 1/2 hrs away cause they have a really good pet shop.I'm over there this week.
Wish me luck.
