New 55 Gallon/ First Saltwater Tank

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and I"m starting my first Salt water tank. I've been reading articles and talking to people at the local tropical fish store. The tank is currently in the cycling phase. I'd like to know what else I might need. I currently have:

Cascade 1000 filter,
250W Heater
1-1.5" of sand cover
Some "decorative" rock (best way to describe it)


I have 4 small hardy fish in the tank to start the cycle...but I don't know what else I need, what I should be most worried about etc...

Any info would be helpful.

you should be most worried about those poor fish u used to start the cycle *thumbsdow all u needed was a few pieces of live rock. you are using live rock arnt you??? youve basicilly done all you can for now probally too much

what do u mean by 'decrotive' rock? fyi u need at least 1lb of rock per gallon, really u should aim for 1.5-2lbs.. a skimmer would be a big help also

I've heard mixed things about needing a skimmer. I gather everyone here feels it's a necessity. Currently the fish are doing fine and my ammonia and nitrates are both almost 0. I think I"m doing o.k so far

A skimmer is really not as necessary on a fish only tank...sure it would be good...but not a necessity.
