Well, the new 55 has caves now and a mix of live plants and artificial ones. The tank has 6 Rainbowfish and 1 Pearl Gourami. Everyone seems to be getting on very well and all their colors are vibrant. They also eat like PIGS!

One question about the Pearl Gourami, though. It seems like it is a female since it lacks the orange coloring on it's belly. She (or he) does this strange swimming routine. She swims mostly on the back side of the aquarium and goes all the way up to the top of the aquarium. At the end of the lap, goes STRAIGHT down to the bottom, turns and makes her way back to the place that she goes straight up again! Rinse and repeat. She doesn't do this constantly though, it just seems like a swimming routine she follows from time to time to the absolute letter. Is this normal for Pearl Gouramis?

She is eating just fine and showing no signs of color loss. She also sometimes hides in a shady spot underneath where the filter flows out. She stays there for varying durations. She really is a nice, non-offensive, non-bullying fish. I hope she is ok and that this is not an alarm for any sickness.

I have a dwarf gourami that also swims up-down up-down along the side of the tank. I thought it might be scratching due to some skin irritation, and on the advice of the lfs worker i added a little salt to the aquarium the swimming became much less frequent and less frantic looking. My guess is that it may be normal gourami behaviour that becomes more pronounced when they are stressed/sick. strange!
