Has anyone heard of this before? I haven't owned them for more than half an hour, they're sitting in the bag acclimating to the temperature and water conditions, and they've spawned. In the bag. How can you tell if the eggs are viable? I don't really have room for a brood but I could shuffle some things to make it work, I guess. Crazy!

maybe put your betta in your 10 gallon... should be fine and put the eggs in the 3 if its filtered/ heated and all.
That's what I was thinking, the 3 is filtered but not heated by an actual heater - it has a light on it that burns pretty hot for its size, keeps the water maybe 74 degrees-ish. Plus the tank has a motherlode of Java Moss in it which should have all kinds of tasties in it for the fry.

Right now I'm keeping the eggs suspended in the 20 gallon, still in the travel bag where the parents can't get to them. That way if they don't hatch I don't have to go about redistributing fish. It'll be an interesting experiment if they do hatch, but I'm not betting on it at the moment.

Oops... Well, at this point call me Darwin because I'm just going to play survival of the fittest with the things. I'm doing partial water changes on the bag and if any hatch I'll move the betta and put the fry in the three gallon. Logically, it's probably better they don't hatch because I really don't have the room for them.

Hey, at least it's a neat learning experience. :)
And if you do get fry, you could (let them grow a bit and then) donate them to your favorite lfs. I've heard that some people are able to trade fish in for discounts on supplies and whatnot. It's still crazy that your fish spawned in the bag!!

I love diamond tetras, I wish I could find some around here!
They've been some of my favorite fish for the longest time, too, but up until recently I didn't have any room for them. Luckily, I have a really good lfs. Kind of expensive, yes, but really good. Now that I've put my celestial danios in my 10 gal. and moved my blue tetras in with the diamonds there's all kinds of shiny, glittery action going on in my tank.

Well, the eggs ended up dissolving. I'm not entirely certain they were ever fertilized, because I never saw any development in them at all, but who knows? Maybe they'll spawn again someday.
