Just went and got 3 new cichlids, and I'm not sure what kind they are.
This dark guy is giving all the other fish a hard time....well it looks like a hard time, they sort of head butt eachother...then lock lips...is this normal or does he need to come out now??!!1
Also he completele changes color...all the dark and that stripe disapeared when we got him in the net.

I think this might be a "rusty something" or a kenyi?

This guy came with big chunks out of his tail....didn't notice till I let him in the tank.
Also the same on what kind it is, maybe kenyi?

all cool looking fish, unfortunately, i know next to nothing about africans so cant help you out with identifying them :p

the lip locking thing is perfectly normal, africans will do this to establish who is dominant, and to fight for territories.

1st is a Melanochromis auratus for sure. Male. This species is one of the most aggressive Mbuna out there and will give the others a hard time.

To tell you the truth, i've racked my brain on the others and cannot put a species to those pics. So i don't know. The yellow one sort of has a yellow lab look to it to me.

1st pic: definately an auratus male. Females and juvies are yellow. Info
2nd pic: possibly a Rusty. Info
3rd pic: Not sure at all... could be a stressed out kenyi, but not real sure

Cichlid-Man is right. The auratus is one of the most beligerant mbuna out there. I'd definately take him back and go with something else. Rusty's are mild. Kenyi's aren't too bad, but they can get nasty, but what mbuna can't?

What size tank do you have these guys in?

No he didn't get picked on at all...he basically went and hid right away, and never came out. He was proably too small for the tank, and I got him from Petco, so he was already in trouble.
Don't buy fish from there...I returned 2 of 3 that I got there, and the 3rd one is still in the tank, but he was pretty beat up when we got him. Looks like it will heal in our tank.
