my son has a 10 gal freshwater tank, it has 1 cory cat, 1 pleco and assorted guppies, filtration is a Duetto on the end of the tank circulation water and an undergravel filter, about 2 months ago while cleaning out his turtle tank, he thought i would be kewl to watch the turtle swim with the fishes, well all but 2 of the guppies died within 2 days of the turtle experience, the pleco and cory cat still going strong, i have changed 50% of the water 2 times with a 2 week break between, have cleaned the duetto 3 times, the water test good, is super clear and doesnt smell, but every time we add new fish they die within 1 day, the 2 original guppies are still going strong , what could be the culprit?

how do you introduce you fish to the tank?
i've read on here to float the bag,(15 min or so) then transfer the fish to a container of some sort that you can secure floating in the tank, a pitcher with a handle you can hang over the side works good, this keeps the temps of the 2 waters the same, then slowy add your tank water to the pitcher. over and hour or 2 this gets the fish use to your tank conditions. then net the fish into our tank.

another way is to have an extra tank and do the same as above, keep your new fish in this tank for observation, but this is not easy for some with only one tank.

after using this method, alot less new fishes have died on me.

when you change water i would only do around 20% at a time, at most once a day if your water is really bad. you can change your water conditions extremely if you do more than that, and 20% stresses the fish less.

also, on the turtle, i do not know to much, but don't turtles eat fish? and especially small ones like guppies? might not be a good idea to put him in the fish tank, but i'm not really sure on that one.

hope my rambling on has helped some, Niki :)

i introduce the fish by letting them float for 15-30 minutes, then i catch them in a net and into the tank, i wasnt there when he did the turtle thing, ive been told that that can stress the fish out alot too, cause they think they are food now, ive also heard that the turtle carry salmonila and thats why i was so hard on the water changes
