I just got four new fish about a week ago two danios (one zebra and the other is yellow not sure what kind of danio) and the other two are minnows. Last night I looked in to find that my yellow danio had had his tail fins and his dorsal fins torn off he was swimming sort of sideway and upside down and i think there might have been a problem with his left fin. He would also stop and turn on his side and go in an arc shape and just not move and float down to the bottom of the tank and just stay there. I dont know how it happened but i think that it might have been the zebra danio becuase i read up on the internet that they can get aggresive if they aren't fed enough or something but i feed them three times a day and i dont know why he (or she) would act like that. I found that he is also bugging the two minnows in the tank and it almost looks like one of the minnows is trying to protect the other one becuase the two minnows are always together they stay side by side in the tank. One of the minnows would puff up his fins every time the danio would come near him. I took the yellow danio out of the tank and into another one so he could heal but he died last night so I dont know what I should do about this "bully fish." Is this normal for these kinds of fish? Could this be stressing out the minnows? Could it actually have been the zebra danio that torn the fins off of the yellow danio? So if someone could give me some advice I would really appreciate it thanks!

Danios are rather active and boisterous fish by their nature. It's quite possible the two Zebras didn't like the look of your Leopard, being a different colour and evreything, and just decided to have a go at it for no better reason than it was different.Fish will always establish a pecking order and they were simply putting it in its place.

I wouldn't expect to many problems with the Minnows. They should keep themselves to themselves. You could put some plants in for them to hide among and to make them feel a little more secure though. If they constantly get hassled by the Zebras it will help to relieve their stress levels.

Keep an eye on things over the next few days though just to make sure.

Well I've been keeping a lookout and well i just realized that when the minnows are around each other they both puff out their fins at each other! I don't know what to do if all of my fish hate each other haha!...but I am going to get some plants today to put in!..do you know how often the tanks should be cleaned? ...also i have three chemicals for the tank, a waste control chemical, aqua plus tap water conditioner, and cyle which makes the fish introduction safer and less stressful, the person i talked to at the store told me that i had to put the chemicals in and let it run for a week before i introduced fish to it? Is this true or does it really harm them if you put them in before? Any help is appreciated thanks!
