Depending on the type of corals, yes some will close up a little/ not expand as much....this is not as common but bleaching is also a factor, you only really have to worry about this with halides or other fairly intense lights
Well you can try to prevent that by placing the specimens at the bottom of the tank and slowly moving them up where you want them over a period of weeks.
