I've recently started a 5 gal. Nano (about 6 days ago) and so far I haven't seen any change. Is this normal? The water is clear. I used LS, LR (about 5 lbs.), and the salinity meter says its at 1.023. The temp has held at 79 F.
I haven't been back to the LFS to buy my test kit but I was wondering when I should expect to see some critters or something coming out of the LR and/or LS. I think to start with I'm going to keep only 1 fish. I still have to research which will be best as I don't want to kill him off. :) I kept a 55 gallon 20 years ago so this is again all new to me. Any help/advice/criticism is welcome. Thank you. ;)

well, as far as seeing stuff on the LR I think you are a way off from that still...maybe in a few weeks to a month.

for fish there really aren't many things you can keep in a 5g...i personally wouldn't keep anything. you might be able to get by with a clown goby

Hi Gina, welcome.

I've seen firefish gobies, purple firefish, and smaller gobies in 5 gallon tanks. With gobies be sure the tank is covered because they jump. For an uncovered tank, you can use some eggcrate (plastic light diffuser grid, you can find this at home depot and cut it down to fit the tank).

The important thing about selecting a fish for a 5 gallon nano is its adult size. Firefish grow a little over 2 inches, but they are skinny and don't add much as much to the bioload say as a false perc would.

Welcome to the tank Gina!!! :D

As far as a fish I think that your best bet would be as Lordroad said a small Gobie. Take a look at their profiles to help. Also you will only see the critters you are talking about when your tank has matured. Good Luck! *thumbsups

Any pics by chance???

As far as what fish you could house in a 5 gallon you are very limited. Imo you could only house the smallest of Gobies such as Clown, Trimma, Neon, etc. Firefish ime love to swim so a 5 gallon might be a little cramped.
