and the gold algae eater and regular rainbow shark that i had got donated to the local LFS so now hopefully i can start growing plants without that algae eater in their tearing it up.

next phase is to buy some botia loaches im thinking angelicus but i dont know and then im planting some java fern on the left side, some micro sword grass around the driftwood, and i want to do a couple amazon swords on the right side with maybe a moss ball or 2 some where within and a couple other misc. plants

i was a beginner buying everything a year and a half ago, and ever since ive been on MFT for a little over 6 months constantly now ive learned what you can keep together for the most part and have decreased a lot of fish since and got it to where i want. cant wait till i get my botia loaches so i can rid of the snails and have good bottom feeders since ive eliminated some and then planting away i go

man its been awhile since i been on here. heres an update. the other day i got from my girlfriends sister and her boyfriend like 6 java ferns that i spread throughout the driftwood waiting for it to attach itself to it and got a huge handful of moss. the amazon sword slowed way down on growth from not having a plant light after mine burnt out.

my question is what would be a good bulb to buy for these plants for optimum growth also what size like 4500-9000 should i get and a great fertilizer that i could pick up here locally without ordering online? i have petcos and petsmarts in my area along with a couple other LFS's.

also plans are to probably add like 2 more amazon swords, rotala indica, rotala nanjenshan, Vals, Corkscrew (vallisneria Americana), and i would like to try Rotala sp. 'Vietnam'.

Avalon where did you get your rotala vietnam?

also thinking im going to get rid of my Hifin pleco as he kinda uproots a lot of my plants because he is so big. i want to add 3 botia stratia loaches and possibly some danios (dont know on them yet)

any suggestions?

i use this for the water conditioner
Walmart.com: TetraAqua AquaSafe Water Conditioner: Fish

i use a tetra product also for fertilizer just cannot find it on any websites

not currently using any types of CO2 setups either

if i should use anything different please let me know. we have very hard water where i live and there is lots of chlorine in it i do know that. anything extra i should be adding or keep on using what i am currently using?

forgot to also add that yes i did add a whole large bag (i think it was 30lbs.) of plant substrate to this that was rich with fertilizers, iron and such. cant remember all of it. it has held in real well and you can see the layer in the middle of the 2-3" of rock that i have in there.

Try to get a bulb around 6700K spectrum. That should work well for the plants. If you want to keep more difficult plants, such as rotala, you'll need to upgrade the fixture and probably add pressurized CO2.

The water conditioner should be fine.

Botia striata would be a good addition. It's almost impossible to keep nice plants with a large pleco. They just unintentionally uproot everything.

ok will look for new 6700k spectrum.

dont have the money for pressurized CO2 system but i really want one. what are some other suggestions other than rotala? i wanted rotala's because of the green, red, and yellow that you can get. those are the colors that i would like. i want them for the left side of my tank. maybe dont need to go that way. ill do some more research on some easier plants that dont require CO2 right away. CO2 is deffinitely in the future but probably not for another 6 months to a year.

is the tetra fertilizer for the plants good or is there something else i should be using during water changes?

yeah my hifin just swims and uproots plants by his speed that he goes so he will probably be definitely going soon. after i get rid of him do you think a school of danios will work with the bichir? i know he will eat anything that he can fit in his mouth but i dont want to get rid of him because he has so much personality. so i was wondering if the danios would be too fast for him.

ok if i took all the rotala off that list and added this Ludwigia, Broad Leaf (Ludwigia repens) how would this fair in the aquarium along with 2 more amazon swords and Vals, Corkscrew (vallisneria Americana)?

all plants would include the ludwigia probably around 5-6 of them on the left side, moss growing thruout but trimmed as necessary, java fern narrow leaf that i currently have and trying to attach to the driftwood, then total of 3 amazon swords on the right side along with the vals, corkscrew?

To be honest, your number one item needs to be a new light fixture, if you want to go fully planted. A single 40w bulb just isn't enough to support vals and ludwigia. The swords may make it, but you won't see their best. Java fern does fine in low light, though.

so basically a pressurized CO2 system is highly needed to go more plants and the plants i want to do?

or is there something else i could do to get them to thrive in there until i get the pressurized CO2 system?

also what would be a couple of the best pressurized CO2 systems that are on the market meant for the aquariums that have everything but the tank out there for my 55g

so ive been doing some research and looked at some different plants that i think i have come up with that will be easy
vals, jungle Vals, Jungle (Vallisneria gigantea)(sold 10 plants per order) (that will be on the left side of tank) java fern in the middle which i already have and trying to get it to attach itself to the driftwood, moss that i have spread in different areas thuout the tank, and a total of 3 amazon swords on the right side (i have 1 already)

first thing ill get is a 6700K spectrum bulb or close whatever i can find, somewhere in here giving away my hifin, purchase 3 botia striata loaches and 2 Lohachata Botia Loach (Botia lohachata), then get the vals jungle and 2 more swords, then finally add a blue paradise gourami, then in around 4-5 months purchase a pressurized CO2 system for the 55g (any suggestions on some good ones for my tank would be great, i want everything included except the CO2 cylinder which i know never comes with in package deals that have everything included) then this tank should be done and next i start a new and A LOT bigger tank like the 180g that ive talked about on here in the past
