Your tank is only 38 gals. You may be able to keep one parrot, but they are very messy and at that you will be pushing it. Sorry no room for jacks or any other parrots in there.

Actually your tank is better suited for dwarf cichlids. There are plenty of them that will do fine in a tank of this size, maybe an angel or 2 for something swimming in the upper regions of the water.

Welcome to the tank!

(Psst.... Hey, Pure..... I figured it for a little over 31 gallons. I know you'll correct me if I screwed it up. :D ) Would that rule out the one parrot?
What do you think would be a good dwarf cichlid for someone who has never kept cichlids before? I'm considering them for an soon-to-be-vacated 29g myself.

LOL thanks for catching that. Dunno where the 8 came from.. I just use an online volume calculater..Real math is for losers. :p
Volume
120 L Equals:
120000 mL
120 L
3550.308 fl oz (US)
3408.132 fl oz (UK)
56.772 pints (US)
68.196 pints (UK)
31.7041 Gal (US)
26.39974 Gal (UK)

By dwarf cichlids I mean fish like Bolivian rams, German blue rams, and any one of the many Apisto species. You can google any one of those and come up with a mass amount of info on them.

A 30 gal would be a little to small in terms of bioload for my taste, but I do believe if waterchanges were kept up one could keep one in a tank that size.

Correct gup..Parrots get to be a nice size and are one of the fattest bodied cichlids in comparison to their length. Meaning how fat the fish is for how long it is. They are like swimming softballs. LOL

I think Pure's right (as usual) - for a tank that size, you'd be better off with dwarf cichlids.

Some examples he didn't mention were keyhole cichlids, a breeding pair of kribs, and checkerboard cichlids.

Here's a good place to start getting some basic info on them:

http://fishprofiles.com/profiles/list.aspx?category=5

(That's a direct link to the cichlids - they have other categories of profiles, too)

And, as always, Google is your best friend when it comes to finding out more about a species...

Google didn't pull much up on the C. araguaiense, but did find that it reaches 9.2 cm (just over 4") on FishBase.org.

I suppose that makes it a dwarf cichlid - but it still might be aggressive. I'd ask someone who works wherever you saw them being sold.

FWIW, Silver Dollars aren't cichlids, but they probably would be a good dither fish for the cichlid...

Also, be sure your tank is cycled before you put the cichlid in it, whether you do it fish-in or fishless. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read the stickies in the beginner forum...
