hello. its been a while since i have posted in the cichlid section, but here goes!

anyone have any info or personal experience with this cichlid?

my local breeder has some beautiful specimen, and i was wondering what their temperment is....i.e. do they do well with oscars. :)

also, how are they sexed? is the female the highly colored one or the male?

i did a google.com search and didnt find much information on them.

thank you
M

A guy in our aquarium club has extensive experience with Nicaraguenses. In fact there was a bunch of his juvies at the last auction meeting.
I can ask him questions for you but unfortunatley he does not have email or a computer.

oh and your google search probably came back nothing cause you probably spelled nicaraguensis wrong. I dont know how to spell it either.

they get kinda large 8 inches but are rather peaceful for large central americans even when breeding, they should have some nice caves or pots or such, in the wild they dig out caves into the banks of the river and nest in them, nice choice of fish, very beautiful

Hypsophrys "Cichlasoma" nicaraguense, or the Spilotum. Cool cichlid! The female, far prettier than the male, develops a nice blue head gold flank and irredesent gold/blue on the dorsal. They're a CA cichlid, slightly alkaline and a little bit hard water. They have a unique breeding behavior. They aren't mouthbrooders, and their eggs don't stick to rocks, branches, or roots. The fish keep them suspended in the water inside of a small cave. My buddy used to breed them in his 125. What a sight!
They're probably tough enough to be with an oscar, provided the tank is large enough. (The Shedd has them displayed with Red Devils)
Personally, I'd put them with some Neetroplus, Thoricthis, and maybe some Sajica.
