:'(
never slap your fish tank
how would you like it if someone came buy your house and started banging on every window in the house at the same time?
try and enjoy your dinner while that was going on

local pet stores will test your water for free most of the time.
did you recently move around all your decorations or something? that will sometimes do it.

I think we all need to kinda work on our people skills here. TLD is new to this whole aquarium world. Aquapshyco she has feeders in there for a good reason. Their a gift. I agree they shouldn't be with barbs but she didn't know so lets work with these people instead of insulting them. BTW how old are you? .....

TLD back to your question... I would say it's somting in your water. Have you lfs test the water for you. Then you can give us the complete results. Also don't ever ever ever hit your tank. If their fighting let them fight. They'll be okay. ;D

TLD, how many barbs do you have? Most barbs are naturally aggressive and need to establish a sort of "pecking order." If there are enough fish, the aggression gets spread out and no one fish gets picked on too much.

I would just lets the spats take place and not worry about it, they're just trying to establish who's boss.

How big is your tank?
How long has it been set up?

If your fish ever start acting strange, a water change is always a good course of action. It certainly wouldn't hurt.

Like most everyone else, I suspect some toxins have built up. Take a sample down to your LFS and have them check it out.

You say after a water change the ppm (ppm=Parts per million, BTW) level was 300. Ppm of what? "Ppm" is just a unit.

actually I wasnt referring to anything that had to do with her fish keeping skills. I was talking about her typing and spelling skills although she was probably doing it on purpose... i sure cant take anyone that feels the need to speak (or type/spell) like a 10 year old that is trying to act cool around some lamo wantabe gangsters or something, seriously
