Don't have this problem. But, as far as ideas:

1. Reduce the number of airpumps by getting dual-output pumps (which may be higher quality and natually less noisy at the same time).

2. Reduce by getting 3 or 4 output gang valves, and adjust as needed.

3. See how much noise is from the air pumps and how much is from the air bubbling in the tank. You may be able to turn down the air some and quiet it down. See #2 to possible help with this.

4. More of a question: How many tanks do you have going, and do you really need that much air? Depending on the filter, I'd consider reducing it.... (Granted, if you're running all sponge filters, you can't do that.)

I had a problem with the subliminal hum of the pumps. They wouldn't bother me during the day, but at night I could hear them thrumming away. The bubbling itself doesn't bother me, my room sounds like a waterfall trickling all the time, and I find that very soothing. It was the hum of the pumps that rackled. Finally I just yanked them all. They really weren't serving much purpose anyway save decoration since my filters are twice the required GPH for the tank sizes they're on.

honestly the only cure for this is a real good high end expensive pump.i have used all kinds of air pumps and you get what you pay for.some are quite when they are new but soon that new quite pump is a nosiy growling beast.i don't use air pumps anymore because of this.i have heard very nice things about the rena air pumps.another idea would be to house the pump in a well insulated box to absorb the noise and just run the airline from far away.

well, here is my Cheapo solution to an annoying problem. put a standard tube sock on each air pump. Seriously. it quiets the pumps down to a reasonable level. I had 22 yanks in my 22x14 room and i had to improvise

Just be careful that if you are putting your pump in anything that you provide adaquate air-flow around the device. You could burn out your motor without giving the pump proper ventilation. Also, if the humming is too loud, try cleaning out the pump's filter. Clogged filters could increase the need for the pump to work, thus making it louder.

I used to have the same problem until I changed my bubble wall for a black bubble tube. they produce the same bubbles plus you can snake them along the tank or in circles or any other way you want. Naturally they are more expensive then bubble wall but the are worth it!

Just take a towel or handtowel and fold it over it. I had the same problem but now its not even noticable. So give that a try first and see how it works for you.
