I have been using Whisper Economy filter on my baby tank (10g) for 3 years. Now, I want to add more fish to the 10g so I think it's time to upgrade my filter. I bought Aquaclear 30 and set it right next to Whisper last night. Once it's up and running, I heard a humming noise from Aquaclear. It's not loud but it's noisier than Whisper for sure. Is this humming noise normal for Aquaclear? How can I reduce the noise? Thanks.

I think it's normal, I've got an aquaclear and it is noisy (especially compared to a whisper... they're called whispers for a reason). If you play with the flow rate, you can try to find the point where the humming is softest.

I leave my AquaClear on full flow except feeding time. I have an AC30 on my 10 gallon hex. on the back of the filter, there is a black thing shaped all funny and it can turn. Turn it so that the AC is sitting on the tank straight, and make sure the cover is fully seated in. Sometimes the cap is loose a bit so it makes vibrating noises, so I put a bottle of water treater or a can of fish food on top of it. Also, since the AC has less space for water flowing to the filter element, since water is forced straight down and across under the foam in very little space.

Good advice! ;)

This is exactly how I eliminated an unusual amount of noise that suddenly started one day back when I had a tank with an AquaClear filter. At first I thought the filter was messed up, but quickly discovered that the lid was vibrating because it wasn't quite seated properly.

The noise is from the lid. If it sits in the intended position, it vibrates. If I remove the lid, the noise is gone.

MrBungle, how did you use the pipe insulation to reduce the noise?
