i know this is a fish website but we probably all have dogs or cats also...i want to say my last goodbye to my 10y/o full bread german shephard...we had to put him down friday afternoon from a year long of hip displasia that was getting worse day by day...he was a great family dog that loved to be around people 24hr a day especially kids...whenever they be around playing he had to be by there side playing with them up to the very last day....he is going to be missed terribly by all of his family...i cant get him out of my mind and whats really messed up is i think i can still hear him around the house...now i know his ghost isnt there i aint that messed up but when i am around i hear noises that i knew was him making before after all these years....sounds kinda crazy but i do...hopefully in a few more days that will pass...but here is to you buddy *celebrate i am sorry for what we had to do

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, putting an animal down is the hardest thing to do because it's part of your family, but remember you unselfish act has relieved him of his pain. Take care and as time passes so will the pain but never the memories.

Snoce..I have been where you are . I am 32 - have had a total of four cats all my life...one lived to be 17 I had to say goodbye to her when I was 21, and the other lived to be 15, I had to say goodbye to her just a year ago last February. Please feel free to PM me or email me, I know exactly what you are going through and I have gathered a lot of website links that I can pass onto you that helped me out a lot.
I'm so sorry - but being a responsible pet owner means that you have to be brave enough to make give them a final gift of release from the pain.

Awww I'm sorry to hear about it Snoce. I'm going to have a hard time with my dog I know...he's my first dog. We had a family dog before I moved out of my parent's house, but this is my first dog that is MINE and I know I'm going to miss him so much :( Hopefully I still have awhile though, he's only 4. Hows your family handling it?

You're gonna make me cry! Its hard when something that has been a part of your routine every day for as long as you can remember, goes away. Its good that the boys aren't taking it too badly. I have a soft spot for GSD's too...my dog is 1/2 gsd.

i feel your pain. my sympathies are with you. i put my 14 year old bichon frise down in october (she had diabetes, bad epilepsy, catarax) so i, too, understand the difficulties on making that final decision. but you know in your heart you did the best thing for your dog. he is at peace now, no longer suffering his hip problems. the first few weeks are teh worst. hope you had a nice funeral for him, and i know that he will be forever in your heart. i'm very sorry to hear your loss.

Snoce...your memories will NEVER go away...that's where your dog will live now, right in your heart with those memories.
I know what you mean about your routine being different, my cat used to sleep with me every night until she got sick with kidney failure. It took a while for me to get used to not having her snuggled up to me when I went to bed. In fact, she didnt sleep with me for her last couple of weeks when she got sick, until one night I woke up and she was in bed with me (I dont know how she managed THAT...she was pretty sick) and then she peed in bed...I knew the time had come when she had no more dignity. That was our last day together...she was 15.
It's so tough...just know you can spill your feelings out right here, it DOES help, trust me I have been there.
(((((hugs))))) to you and your family.

I don't know if this would help but people often feel better if they find a new puppy to turn their attention to. The new guy or gal would never replace the lost loved one but would demand you attention and help you to start building new memories. Aside from losing a loved one there is nothing worse than losing a great dog.

The dog is a gentleman;
I hope to go to his heaven,
not man's.

my wife and i talked bout getting a new dog but we dont want to for a few years...its always been a hassel when we went on vacation or away for the weekend....all the mess in the backyard and vet visits...dont get me wrong but i would love to have him back and deal with all that again but we need a break from the dog life...plus now in the spring i wanna do some landscaping and gardens in my backyard plus get green grass back again....so for now we will be dog free for some time now....but who knows when we are in a pet store or see puppies what we will do....
