I was at the beach the other day and found 3 really cool looking rocks.
I soaked them in hot water, and left them in the water overnight.
The next day I rinsed them through warm water quite well, and then soaked them in hot water again.

Are they safe to put in my freshwater tank? Or will any residual salt make my fish explode?

Ill snap photos once the GF returns. IDK where she put the digicam.

One looks like a very compressed limestone, but white in color.
One of them has shell imprints on it.
The other reminds me of petrified wood.

I can tell you already, the one with shell imprints on it - carbonate rock, or carbonate cement at least. It could throw off your pH levels, along with the compressed limestone one, assuming it is a limestone.

I can't think of what would look like petrified wood at the top of my head. I'll wait excitedly for pictures :D

Hehe, I'm glad i chose to be a geology major. :p

It is possible to do this just be cautious of what rock to put in, i have 200 lbs of rock i picked off the beach that is in my tank. I know you can google a way to test the rock or something, i used vinegar i think to see if it reacted to it. If there was no reaction i.e. bubbling or fizzing they were safe for water or something like that. I stuck to the dark color ones. I cleaned all rocks with cold water and a brush to scrub all cracks and corners.
