What readings are you getting? Also, what decorations/gravel do you have in the tank? Some types of rock and dead coral will raise the tank pH.
Test your tapwater after it has sat out for 24 hours. A lot of water will have gas in it which lowers the pH. Once that has gassed off, you'll get a truer reading.
To be honest, pH is one of the simplest tests. As long as you're not color blind, you should get an approximate reading with whatever you use.
