Boeseman Rainbows...what size tank do you have them in?

Rainbows, espeically these big ones, need lots of room for lots of active swimming. The big female that is gravid with eggs, if you seperate her from the males in your tank (provided you have males there) the eggs will not be fertile and you'll have no fry. If she doesn't breed, I believe the females either reabsorb the eggs into their bodies, or just release them, where they'll make a nice snack for the rest of your fishies. She should unbloat in a week or two usually.

Rainbows are a schooling fish, they don't show any parental care of the young that I know of. I don't know if they attach their eggs to a surface or if they're broadcast spawners. Either way, I still doubt they have anything to do with the hatchlings except to eat them if they can get 'em.

One little bit of information that I got from my asst. manager who bought one four inch speciment for his 55 gallon. He said every so often it becomes a bright, flaming red, then returns to its golden color. About once a week.  We've pretty much figured he's got a male reaching breeding peak, not finding any females, and falling out of "rut" I guess we can call it. We don't think it is water chemistry because all his other fish (red-tailed shark, silver dollars, red-blue tetras) are fine.

Either way, I do think your Rainbows probably need a whole lot of space to work themselves up into a breeding freenzy of some kind (knowing how spaztic rainbow schools can be). I don't know of any websites specifically on Rainbows, but if you type "tropical fish" into any search engin, you'll get lots of websites for all types of info.

They're pretty active swimmers that like lots of room. Not Danio spaztic, but they are constantly in motion from what I have observed. If you spook them, they will jump right out of the tank.
