Hi

I recently bought a red tiger oscar from a local pet shop, he's around 10-11 inches long. I have found he will not eat anything apart from frozen fish from a pet store near me. I've tried pellet foods, bloodworm cubes and garden worms.

I am looking for some suggestions to try, What do other Oscar owners feed theirs? Is it possible to feed them live insects?

Any food suggestions much appreciated!!

I am getting an oscar and I have gone over and over food lists. I would defiantly try to get him eating something other than frozen fish. If you can find a good pellet food that would be great, most people I've talked to feed their oscars Hikari Bio-gold Pellets. As for live foods oscars usually don't refuse many thinks, crickets, mealworms, mealworm beetles, earthworms, crayfish, shrimp, krill. But I think the main portion of food needs to be from pellet/flake food.

Also it is good, if your oscar will eat them, to feed vegetables, fruits, and even some nuts. I wide variety of foods will help give the oscar the vitamins and nutrients he needs. Hope you find something he'll eat!

check back with the lps and see what he/she is use to. if you haven't had him long give him time to settle in they are big baby's.. feeder fish can be addicting remember he can go a long time with out food. bottom feeders may solve your water changing problem.. i have also found if they have to fight for food they get less finikey*.

My oscar didn't want to eat the first few days I had him either. I have since bouth Hikari Gold for both my jack dempsey and oscar. I also feed them lettuce, bloodworms, and insect that fly close enough for me to grab them. I have tubifex worms and even some flake food they get in that tank as well. It is good to give them variety and if they don't eat one day, they should the next. I only feed this tank once a day, usually shortly after lights out. Good luck to you and your oscar.

Thanks for all your replies!

Im going to try live food, ive tried various pellet foods and veg but he just lets them float there all day, but as soon as you drop a frozen fish in the tank he's after it like a flash!

Thanks for your help guys :)

I feed the Hikari pellets, but he is growing tired of them...he'll take them, then chews em up and spits em out...eventually he does eat them...I also feed shrimp pellets(those are his favorite) and tropical crumbles...oh, and guppies...he LOVES guppies!! :) I haven't done crickets yet, although I hear they LOVE them!
