I have a big problem with my tap water. When I do a water change my ammonia level spikes and my tank gets really cloudy. I don't want to buy water all the time. What should I do? Reverse Osmosis filter for my tap water or what? Can I just use a reverse osmosis filter and just filter my tank once a month and not do water changes?

It sounds to me like you have chloramines in your water, and your dechlorinator isn't neutralizing the ammonia. Chloramine is a bonding of ammonia and chlorine, and most dechlorinators will break that bond (if added in the right dose), but still leave you with free ammonia. Try a dechlorinator that also neutralizes the ammonia and see if that helps. Otherwise, you may have to switch to a reverse osmosis filter. You do have to filter the tapwater before adding it to the tank with a reverse osmosis system, and normally you should add something like R.O. Right to add back the necessary minerals and electrolytes.

How do you properly use a reverse omosis filter. Some only produce 100 gpd. Were do you store the extra water? I have a 100 galon african tanginikan tank. Once the water is filtered does it go straight to your tank? I assume you would know longer use dechlorinators etc.... The city of denton tap watr is no good.
