I have a 110 litre tank with a fluval U3 filter, and have been having trouble with alge (brownish in colour) of late, too much light might be the cause. I have tried most things to cut this out but to no avail I was wondering if upgrading the filtration to an osmosis set up would be of benifit overall and help controll the alge and keep the water in top condition. I wondered of the oerall cost to set up or recomendations on units (I am in the uk). Thanks for the help.

The problem with using a reverse osmosis system is that you then have to put some of the minerals back in the water. Reverse osmosis (RO) basically gives you something similar to distilled water. It has no minerals and no buffering capacity, which means the pH can fluctuate wildly. You can mix half RO with half tapwater. Overall, I think it's a really expensive way to get water for a freshwater tank, and you'd be better off looking at your lighting, maintenance and other factors.

Thanks for the reply, just a couple of questions. If osmosis is too impraticle, would upgrading to a larger pump/filter system help with the alge situation? Also with maintenance, when I clean the tank I change water as well, could there be something im missing here when doing so. Thanks for the advice

I clean the tank every week changing a third of the water (27 liters) at a time. its a 110 ltr tank, gravel bottom and I try not to over feed. might not clean the filters enough but do it every other water changes. I take all the plants out (silk) every month and clean same as the pump. One thing that bothers me is that I use API to add to water for changes, both stress coat and dechlorinator. It says use 5 ml for every ltr of tank water. Does that mean the water you are changing or the total water in the tank?? maybe this is where im going wrong.
