Actually there are some smaller African river cichlids that can be kept in a community tank.

Pelvicachromis pulcher, the 'Kribensis', isn't exactly a model citizen in a community tank, especially when breeding time rolls around. Other African cichlids that could be put in a community tank would include other species of Pelvicachromis like P. taeniatus or P. subocellatus, or the species of Nannochromis (N. dimidiatus and N. nudiceps). Anomalochromis thomasi is also a good candidate.

Before you rush out and get some of these cichlids to toss in with your little fish...it is important to understand that all cichlids can be 'rough customers' on occasion and none of them are perfectly safe all the time. My daughter had a homicidal 'Kribensis' that killed everything that was put in the tank with him. On the other hand, I've kept Nannochromis nudiceps in an aquarium with small tetras and it was a model citizen, though they have a reputation for being quarrelsome.
