My tanks are old enough for otos. Some where I read that the number of otos you can put in a tank depended on the size of the tank because they only eat algae. Therefore, even if you only put otos in a tank, you could only put "X" number per gallon. Now I am sure this would depend on a few other factors - like sunlight on the tank and decorations and plants, but is there a ballpark figure?

It depends on the size of your tank and how much algae you have. If you don't already have a ready supply of algae, don't get otos. That's one of the biggest mistakes people make with otos. They get them without having a food source for them, thinking that because they have a mature tank the otos will be fine. I have yet to see any of my otos (past or present) even think about touching an algae wafer or even zucchini.

yes if you have a large tank (20+gal) and its mature, you should start growing an algae wall in your tank. what i do is i dedicate one wall of the tank to it and i never scrape it (except maybe some times when it gets too congealed with algae and not even otos can srape it off)So you extend your light schedule on your tank to around 10+ hours so that you get good alage growth, and you should also have a few live plants in your tank too. ance your tank is ready with algae you could buy around 5 otos. I doubt you would need more than 7-8 of them in a medium sized tank anyway. 5 is good for a 20 gallon IMO.
