My mom has an outdoor pond in San Diego...water temp gets down to maybe 60 in the winter...currently stocked with goldfish but we were just wondering if there are any semi-tropicals that do well at that temperature, or could be kept inside for winter and let out in summer...

Paradise fish are the best for this purpose, they are hardy, breed easily, but they are a bit territorial. Koi are good canidates but get rather large and can be expensive. Convict cichlids would be another choice, and they stay at about 6 inches. They also breed easily and are very good parents.

Try native North American fish such as sun perch or bluegill. They would not have to be brought in during the winter provided your pond is deep enough so it doesn't freeze all the way to the bottom. They will also help keep down mosquiote control by eating the larva laid in the pond.

We had a company pond in Houston that was stocked with a selfreplenihing supply of platys - I'm not sure what type though as one species is good down to 60 and one isn't. Also check a book for a species of molly that's good for that too.
If the pond was big enough, koi. I guess a few cichlidswould work, but unless it's shallow or clear you'd never see them
