Is there a fish profile encyclopedia that I could load onto a PDA to take with me to the LFS so I can reasearch the stock there instead of trying to write down or remember the names of the fish?

There isn't one that I know off, but you could always make your own either in the notepad, or get a database program to enter it in and by using the database you can then sort the data anyway you would like too and add as much or as little that you want.

For a mobile database, I like MobileDB.

Cool idea. I do the research first - just copy and paste basic info (from MFT's database, if I can) on all ot the fish I think I might want into a memo on my PDA. Then I compare what the LFS people tell me to what I have in the PDA. I can tell if they have a clue, then. I'll find a different salesperson if it is obvious they don't. (How rude of me!)

If they recommend other fish, I copy the info into the PDA, and research it at home. It is a bit of a pain, though, cuz I live in a relatively remote area, and only make it into the city about 1X/month. Sometimes the stuff they recommend is gone by the time I get back to actually buy it. A portable DB would be great.

I like mobileDB too. Anyone up for creating a fish DB?

It shouldn't be to hard to make one with mobileDB. Of course the biggest draw back is that you would need to get a registered version to use it long. I belive the demo only works for 15 days.

I'll try and see what else is out there that we could do the same thing with that may come as freeware.

What OS are you all using? I'm on Palm V4.x.

I have been thinking about build something like this but it would require a ot of help since I know almost nothing. I wonder how many would be will to provie a pic, and detailed bio on the fish, coral, others. I would be glad to do the nuts and bolts end if the data was available. I would rather start out with SW first then go from there

The pic would be neat, but for those of us like me with a Palm III, black and white display, and only 8megs of memory that wouldn't work to well. lol But noteworthy none the less. ;)

And I ment to mention, I did create a database that allowed me to take my palm with me to record chemistry readings (ph, kh, gh) as well as temp and over all condition of the tank and then created a database in Microsoft access to sync it all too. Pretty neat for the geeky, but honestly I haven't rememeberd to use it that much. lol
