I have a 3"(7.5cm) male pearl gourami in a 40H (150L) tank, and he is very shy. He stays at the back and hides at almost any movement outside the tank. I was thinking about getting some female pearls to make him more confident, but I don't know how they get along? Or how many I should get? I've heard of some males being aggressive with the females, but my male is so shy.

Thanks a lot

Try getting some females. Pearls are very social and should be kept in groups even though they are often called aggressive, they naturally live in big schools when not breeding. Your male will be much more to your liking and you will see him more if you add some other pearls.

That's just what I wanted to hear. I can't seem to find any info. on how they are found in the wild? But you say groups(shoals)? You don't happen to know where I can find this appetizing info. do you?

Thanks again

I don't remember where I found this but I know it is true. You will always find male and female pearl gouramis to be very unaggressive unless they are breeding or the male is taking care of his eggs, and/or fry.

I love these fish!

I have 4 of these beautiful fish in my 29 gal. They generally swim all over the tank and only pick on each other occasionally. I am not sure the male to female ratio (sexing suggestions?)

I would also go along with the advice posted and get a small group in your tank.

Good Luck *celebrate
