Basically I learned that when I bought my 29 gal. starter kit from Wal-Mart it came with a Regent filter. I was told that I needed a bio-wheel with my filter. I go out, purchase a Penguin 170, hook it up and realize that the Penguin and my Regent are the exact same filters minus the bio-wheel on the Regent. If I would have waited and been patient, I would have saved about 20 bucks by just buying a bio-wheel and brackets for my Regent. Just thought you should know.

Hmmm, that sounds very familiar. Ah yes, it happened to me too. I got the walmart kit with the regent 20-40 filter. Then bought a penguin 170 also. But its good in a way, I use both the penguin 170 and regent 20-40 running on my 29g since one wasn't enough filtration. With two of them, they keep the water sparkling clear. I never bothered putting a bio-wheel (although I do have an extra bio-wheel and bracket) on the regent 20-40. On both filters, behind the filter cartridge, I stuffed a sponge (trimmed to fit) in there. Works great.

The Penguin 170 and regent 20-40 is bascially the same filter. This applies to the penguin 330 and regent 30-60. Same size, cartridge, design, etc. The only thing thats different is the lid, and the gph. The penguin 170 is rated at well.... 170 gph. I've read that the regent 20-40 is rated at 160 gph. So it looks as if their motors are slightly different, or maybe that's what Marinland wants us to think?

Well, you can still get the bio-wheel and brackets for the regent. Then you can get another tank. Now, you don't have to worry about getting another filter. You can save yourself a couple of bucks that way.....or at least you have piece of mind. ;)
