i am wanting to get into salt water and i know bigger is better and salt is expensive, but about how much is it per gallon? or how much would a 72 gallon tank be to set up including the price of the tank and stand average prices, so give or take $500 would be great

setup cost on my 55 was about $1200 for equipment but $200 of that was lights which you wouldn't need at that level for a FOWLR. depending on whether or not you get a drilled tank the cost of a sump and such will come into play as well. add in another $300-$500 for live rock. $50 for substrate if you do a shallow sandbed.

I would say $1500 is a conservative estimate to set up a 72 before you add fish

Yeah, $1500 is conservative. I have my 55 just about done, with some damsels in there for quality assurance purposes, and I have almost $1500 with everything I've done and it's only a FOWLR tank. So $1500 is a conservative amount, and it can be done, but there's really no way to do a nice 72 for only $500.

i think he was just saying he wanted an estimate within $500 of accuracy

jeleak: i just noticed you are in Alaska so I would imagine some of this stuff might cost a bit more up there and another thing to consider is that a lot of online retailers (where equipment and live rock is cheapest) will not ship up there

heh yeah, i wanted a estimate within $500 so $1500 is what i was looking for

and yeah some stuff up here is expensive, but live rock is about $6 a lb so its not too bad i think, and i think i saw a 72 gallon bow front for like $200

shipping isnt too bad if you get it slowly, its only when its next day air when it gets $$$
